A landmark public transport initiative

The Queensland Government is leading the way in transforming connectivity across the Sunshine Coast with The Wave public transport initiative, a key component of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Delivery Plan. Announced in March 2025, this ambitious project underscores the government's commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure that supports regional growth and enhances liveability.

Stage 3 of The Wave will introduce a high-capacity, high-frequency public transport service connecting Birtinya to the Sunshine Coast Airport. This new service will link key hubs, including Mountain Creek and the Maroochydore CBD, providing a seamless and efficient transport option for residents and visitors alike.

By delivering this vital stage of The Wave, the government is preparing the Sunshine Coast for the influx of visitors during the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games while providing a long-term, sustainable transport solution to support the region's growth and prosperity.

Why The Wave?

The Sunshine Coast, one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions with high private car ownership, is set to benefit from The Wave, an innovative transport solution designed to reduce congestion, improve travel times, and strengthen community connections.

This high-frequency public transport corridor offers a visionary approach to improving the efficiency of the broader transport network. It will be designed with flexibility in mind, and serve as a transport spine, seamlessly integrating with other bus services as the region continues to expand.

Recognising the diverse travel needs of the community, the initiative also prioritises the development of interconnected public transport corridors. Rather than relying on a single service, this networked approach ensures a comprehensive, efficient, and user-friendly solution for all.

Aligned with the Southern Sunshine Coast Public Transport Strategy and building on the Sunshine Coast Public Transport project, The Wave represents a well-planned, integrated vision for a connected and liveable Sunshine Coast for generations to come.

A high-capacity, high-frequency service offers a range of long-lasting benefits for the Sunshine Coast, extending well beyond the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and contributing to a more connected and liveable region. These benefits include:

Economic benefits

  • Boosting the local economy: A stronger public transport network helps people move around the region more easily, supporting local businesses and driving economic growth.
  • Affordable travel: With ongoing 50 cent fares across public transport modes, this service offers a cost-effective way to travel.
  • Cost savings for residents: Shifting to public transport means less spending on fuel and vehicle maintenance.

Social benefits

  • Stronger social connections: Less time spent stuck in traffic means more time for what matters – connecting with family, friends, and the community.
  • Equitable access: A new style of service ensures fair access to transport for everyone, including young people, seniors, and people living with disabilities, who may not have access to private vehicles.
  • Reduced congestion: Fewer cars on the road will lead to smoother, less stressful commutes for all.

Urban Liveability

  • Better connectivity: An accessible public transport system links communities, making it easier to get where you need to go.
  • Healthier neighbourhoods: Supporting walkable communities encourages active lifestyles and healthier living.
  • Greener spaces and smarter planning: A well-designed transport system allows for more green spaces and better urban planning outcomes, enhancing the overall quality of life.

By embracing an enhanced public transport system, the Sunshine Coast can create a future that is more connected and equitable for all its residents.
