The rail project will be delivered in two stages, which is made up of three distinct construction packages detailed below.

Stage 1 includes:

  • delivery of a new 19km dual-track rail line (and associated infrastructure, including one upgraded and two new stations) from Beerwah to Caloundra
  • planning, design and market engagement to confirm delivery costs and timeframes to deliver the rail line to Birtinya
  • protection of the revised alignment.

Stage 2 includes:

  • delivery of an additional 7km dual-track rail line (and associated infrastructure, including two new stations and approximately 1km tunnel) from Caloundra to Birtinya
  • connection with the metro-style services at Birtinya station to enable people to travel seamlessly to the Sunshine Coast Airport.

Pre-delivery activities are now underway. Major construction is expected to commence early 2027 subject to approvals and funding for Stage 2.

Preliminary works

Preliminary works between Beerwah and Birtinya are now underway. Preliminary works inform development of the reference design and the environmental referral.

This includes:

  • geotechnical investigations
  • baseline noise and vibration monitoring
  • cultural heritage and environmental investigations
  • additional site survey
  • public utility investigations and design
  • flora and fauna mapping
  • groundwater monitoring and contaminated land testing, to ensure environmental impacts are properly assessed.

Residents in close proximity to planned work locations will be notified prior to work occurring.

We understand works can be frustrating for nearby residents and businesses and acknowledges the cooperation and patience of stakeholders while works are carried out.

Please contact the project team on 1800 407 533 or email thewaverail@tmr.qld.gov.au for any questions about preliminary works.

Other early works for construction are anticipated to start following environmental approvals.
