• The G2BU project combines the delivery of the $1 billion Gateway Motorway, Bracken Ridge to Pine River upgrade and the $948 million Bruce Highway (Brisbane – Gympie), Gateway Motorway to Dohles Rocks Road upgrade (Stage 1).
• It provides additional lanes on the Gateway Motorway between Bracken Ridge and the Pine River, improves the motorway curve at Bracken Ridge and upgrades the Bruce Highway interchange with Gateway Motorway and Gympie Arterial Road, south of the Pine River.
• A shared pedestrian and bicycle path on the northern side of the motorway will be installed, including upgraded connections to Barfoot Street, Deagon Deviation, Wyampa Road.
• New noise barriers and environmental features such as fauna fencing and fauna underpasses will also be provided.

The Department has awarded this major Design and Construct Contract to CPB, BMD & Georgiou Joint Venture (Designers GHD and BG&E) – referred to as the Gateway Connect Joint Venture (GCJV).

• Significant population growth in the north Brisbane and Moreton Bay regions is increasing demand on what is one of Queensland’s busiest road corridors.
• Without additional capacity from these upgrades, this vital section of the national highway will be heavily congested for longer periods.
• Current traffic levels are expected to increase by around 50 per cent by 2041.
• Each day, around 160,000 vehicles travel between the Moreton Bay Region and north Brisbane on the Gateway Motorway, Bruce Highway and Gympie Arterial Road.

Upgrading these sections of the Gateway Motorway and Bruce Highway is a significant investment in improving safety, mobility, and economic growth in the north Brisbane and southern Moreton Bay region. These major infrastructure upgrades will help the Queensland Government cater for increasing traffic demands and improve safety on this busy road corridor.

Early works underway from mid-October 2026.

Construction is expected to take 5 years, subject to weather and conditions permitting. The timing will be further confirmed in the detailed design phase and when environmental approvals are received.

• We will keep motorists, and the community informed about expected changes and/or impacts when this major project moves into construction.
• To minimise traffic disruption, works will be carried out offline, where possible or at night when traffic volumes are lower.
• TMR will collaborate closely with GCJV (the Contractor) to manage traffic staging and minimise impacts wherever possible, while prioritising safety during motorway works.
• Further information will be provided to motorists and the local community about what to expect closer to when construction starts, currently expected late 2026.

The project will deliver upgraded active transport facilities for pedestrians and bike riders, ensuring safe and convenient north-south movement across the motorway corridor.

The design includes grade-separated, accessible connections across the Gateway Motorway, Bracken Ridge Road and Barfoot Street, allowing pedestrians and bike riders to avoid crossing at traffic signals.

Additionally, new signalised pedestrian crossings will be installed at intersections on Bracken Ridge Road, which will be realigned to pass over the motorway, providing an alternative option of crossing at traffic signals.

Yes, due to the constrained nature of the existing road corridors within the project area some property resumption has been unavoidable to accommodate the upgrades. The formal (compulsory) land resumption process was finalised on 11 July 2025, no further property acquisition is required for the upgrade.

The existing Bracken Ridge Fire and Rescue Station (located on Bracken Ridge Road) is fully impacted by upgrades to the Gateway Motorway.

A new replacement station is currently under construction at 7 Depot Road, Deagon. The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is working closely with the Queensland Fire Department and the existing station will remain operational until the new replacement station is up and running.

• Given the location of the existing Gateway Motorway Road corridor, some impacts to environmentally sensitive areas including Tinchi Tamba Wetlands will be necessary to facilitate the upgrades.
• However, comprehensive environmental planning work has been undertaken throughout the planning phase including detailed assessments of potential environmental impacts and the development of mitigation strategies to minimise impacts on sensitive areas as much as possible.

• TMR has also engaged directly with representatives from over 10 local environmental groups since 2020. Their feedback has been invaluable in shaping the project’s planning and environmental strategies. This has included provision for fauna connectivity with two fauna underpasses being provided by the project connecting with Tinchi Tamba as well as the installation of fauna fencing between Tinchi Tamba and the motorway, where there currently is none.
• There are no impacts from the project to Deagon Wetlands.
• The project is also outside of the Moreton Bay Ramsar site and Moreton Bay Marine Park.

• The project has resumed approximately 20ha of the 390ha Tinchi Tamba Wetlands Reserve for the upgrades.
• When evaluating options for the upgrades in the planning phase, the Department adopted a balanced approach to property requirements, carefully weighing both environmental impacts and private property considerations.
• To accommodate the required road widening, property acquisition has been strategically undertaken on both sides of the existing motorway corridor, minimising impacts solely on the wetlands.

• The upgrades have been referred for approval to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, and the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC) in early 2024. DCCEEW has advised the upgrades will be controlled actions assessed by Public Environment Reports.
• The project was assessed through a Public Environment Report process, with public consultation undertaken from 30 June to 28 July 2026. Feedback received during consultation informed the final assessment documentation. The Public Environment Report and supporting documentation can be viewed on the Queensland Government Publications Portal.On 23 September 2026, the Australian Government National Environmental Protection Agency approved the project, subject to conditions.

Engagement has been ongoing with the community and key stakeholders since planning commenced in 2020, including three formal consultation and feedback periods.

Community engagement is an important part of the project’s delivery and will continue as the upgrades progress. Ahead of construction, detailed information will be provided to the local community and motorists to outline what to expect during the works.

• The G2BU project is part of a staged delivery of upgrades to the Gateway Motorway and Bruce Highway in north Brisbane and Moreton Bay Region, to align with available funding.
• The next priority stage for delivery is the Bruce Highway (Brisbane - Gympie), Gateway Motorway to Dohles Rocks Road upgrade (BGD) (Stage 2).
• This next stage connects with G2BU south of the Pine River and is critical to unlock the capacity constraint at the existing Pine River Bridges.
• It will see collector-distributor roads installed either side of the highway connecting Dohles Rocks Road with the Gateway Motorway and Gympie Arterial Road.
• The Queensland Government is currently undertaking preliminary design and further funding is required for delivery.
• Once the staged upgrades are complete, road users will benefit from a safer and more reliable travel experience.
