The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and City of Gold Coast have progressed the design for the upgrade of Goldmine Road in Ormeau.

As part of the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program, TMR will deliver a section of the upgrade including the new rail facility entrance – a new signalised intersection to be located on Goldmine Road.

Design now available

In August 2024, TMR announced that Goldmine Road will be jointly upgraded by TMR and City of Gold Coast to meet current road standards and improve safety, traffic flow, active transport, and flood resilience for the local community.

Since the announcement, City of Gold Coast commenced the first stage of the upgrade at the intersection of Goldmine Road and Lahrs Road, which is due for completion in mid-2025.

TMR will deliver the next stage of the upgrade (known as Stage 2). As part of this upgrade, TMR will provide improved road safety with dedicated turning lanes and pedestrian crossings.

Key stakeholder feedback and technical investigations have informed TMR's design process.

The design presented on the map is for illustrative purposes only and is subject to further detailed planning and approvals.

Key features

The Stage 2 upgrade design addresses the following key features:

  • the new rail facility entrance
  • local roads and driveways off Goldmine Road
  • bus stops on Goldmine Road
  • active transport
  • improved flood resilience.

You can learn more about these features below.

The new entrance to the Ormeau rail facility will connect to Goldmine Road with a new signalised intersection.

The new entrance will include:

  • A new signalised intersection to improve safety and control the flow of vehicles accessing the rail facility. Priority will be given to through traffic on Goldmine Road. Vehicles exiting the rail facility will be held within the facility entrance.
  • Dedicated turning lanes for vehicles entering the rail facility, keeping through traffic moving on Goldmine Road.
  • A new signalised pedestrian crossings at the intersection.
  • A shared user path at the intersection with connections to bus stops and the residential area.

The design of the rail facility will include a safe turnaround point for vehicles that may have accidentally entered the facility.

The upgrade will connect to City of Gold Coast's upgrade of the Lahrs Road-Goldmine Road intersection (Stage 1 underway). Access to all existing driveways and local roads will be maintained.

The design considers feedback provided by Lewani Palms Resort, which has 2 entrances located on Goldmine Road. Although the entry/exit points to the resort will remain the same, the design of the upgrade includes:

  • Installing a new dedicated right-turn lane at the western entrance, also known as Pacific Drive, to provide safer conditions for turning motorists and keep through-traffic moving.
  • Retaining the existing access arrangement at the eastern entrance, also known as Lewani Parade.

For safer passenger and traffic movements, there will be minor changes to the location of 2 bus stops near Lewani Palms Resort on Goldmine Road. The bus route and timetables will remain the same.

These bus stops will be relocated to facilitate better pedestrian connectivity and improve traffic flow on Goldmine Road. The bus bays will be constructed within the existing road reserve.

TMR will install a new shared user path for all active transport users. The new off-road shared path will support active transport including pedestrians, bike riders, people with prams, mobility scooters, and wheelchairs.

The new 2-metre-wide path will extend along the southern side of Goldmine Road, between Lahrs Road to the extent of the rail facility entrance.

The existing culvert on Goldmine Road (between the railway overpass and Jonquil Street) will be upgraded to improve flood resilience.

The design of the upgrade considers the natural waterway (Bridge Creek) and the road positioning in a low-lying area. To improve the flood resilience of Goldmine Road, TMR will install new drainage including additional culverts under the road.

TMR will increase the number of culverts for improved water flow following severe rain events.

Next steps

Site investigations to inform the design are now complete. The design of the Goldmine Road upgrade is subject to change based on future design work.

Construction of the upgrade is anticipated to commence from early 2026.

During construction, TMR anticipates there will be changed traffic conditions on Goldmine Road. Motorists, pedestrians and bike riders may experience detours, intermittent closures, and other traffic control measures in and around the work area. Nearby residents and businesses may experience impacts including noise, vibration, dust, and an increase in workers, construction vehicles, and machinery.

As further details on the construction schedule are defined, TMR will provide information to the local community on what to expect in advance of works commencing.

Any further upgrades of Goldmine Road to the east of the new rail facility entrance are outside the current project scope and would be managed by the City of Gold Coast.
