Commitment to sustainability
The Queensland Government partners with the Infrastructure Sustainability Council (ISC) to independently evaluate and certify the environmental, social, economic and governance sustainability of major Queensland transport projects.
We integrate the ISC framework into our planning, design, construction and operational phases. This involves setting clear sustainability objectives, adopting innovative practices, and implementing measures to minimise environmental impacts, such as reducing carbon emissions, conserving natural resources, and enhancing biodiversity. We also prioritise community engagement, cultural heritage preservation and social inclusion to ensure our projects meet the needs of all Queenslanders.
-
By embedding sustainability principles into every stage of project delivery, we aim to create resilient, future-focused infrastructure that supports economic growth, improves liveability, and contributes to Queensland’s transition to a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.
Community feedback and sustainability highlights to date
As part of our commitment to community engagement and social sustainability for the MRI Upgrade, we have actively sought community input over the course of the project, including during the planning phase for MRI Upgrade Stage 1 in 2021, and for preliminary design in 2023.
This engagement ensured the project aligned with community values and addressed key concerns. Through this process, the community identified the following priority issues for consideration:
- Design suggestions: A variety of ideas were proposed to enhance different aspects of the project.
- Noise: Strong support was expressed for installing noise barriers to reduce noise impacts on residents.
- Caboolture to Maroochydore Corridor Study (CAMCOS): Feedback highlighted the importance of safeguarding the CAMCOS public transport corridor.
- Active transport: Feedback emphasised the need for better pathways, better cycling infrastructure, and more direct pedestrian routes.
- Property impacts: Questions were raised about the timing and processes involved in property acquisitions.
- Traffic congestion: Feedback included queries about whether the proposed layout would effectively address or potentially worsen congestion.
- Project timing and staging: Stakeholders called for an accelerated project timeline, with some noting that the upgrades are overdue.
- Environmental impacts: Feedback was received regarding potential effects on the natural environment and local wildlife.
- Amenity: Feedback highlighted potential impacts on nearby parks and public spaces.
- Safety: Suggestions focused on improving safety measures for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.
