Overview
The Queensland Government is preparing a business case to upgrade the Dunwich (Gumpi) Ferry Terminal at Junner Street, North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah).
The upgrade aims to improve how the ferry terminal is used, experienced, and integrated with the surrounding area, with a key focus on improving safety, accessibility, connectivity, wayfinding, and movement within and around the terminal.
The upgrade is one of 29 commitments that comprise the South East Queensland (SEQ) City Deal - a partnership between the Australian and Queensland governments and Council of Mayors SEQ (CoMSEQ) to generate long-lasting benefits for the SEQ region.
The ferry terminal upgrade also aims to create a sense of arrival to reflect the island's character and culture, protect cultural and heritage values, and create opportunities for commercial and retail operations.
Proposed concept design
Following technical investigations and key stakeholder engagement, a concept design that integrates the land adjacent to the existing ferry terminal was developed to best balance the needs of all ferry terminal users and achieve SEQ City Deal objectives.
Key features and benefits include:
- a new dual-berth passenger ferry pontoon
- safer pedestrian links
- on-site parking and kiss ‘n’ ride facilities
- sheltered ferry pontoon, gangway, and bus stop
- improved vehicle and bus access
- simplified barge and ferry access
- landscaping and seating
- community open space
- provision for small commercial and retail outlets.
