Overview

The Queensland Government is preparing a business case to upgrade the Dunwich Ferry Terminal at Junner Street, North Stradbroke Island.

The upgrade aims to improve how the ferry terminal is used, experienced, and integrated with the surrounding area, with a key focus on improving safety, accessibility, connectivity, wayfinding, and movement within and around the terminal.

The upgrade is one of the commitments that comprise the South East Queensland (SEQ) City Deal - a partnership between the Australian and Queensland governments and Council of Mayors SEQ (CoMSEQ) to generate long-lasting benefits for the SEQ region.

The ferry terminal upgrade also aims to create a sense of arrival to reflect the island's character and culture, protect cultural and heritage values, and create opportunities for commercial and retail operations.

Proposed concept design

A concept design was developed to present a vision for a safer, more accessible and better-connected Dunwich Ferry Terminal. This provided an opportunity for stakeholders and the community to review and comment on proposed improvements before the design is refined as part of the business case.

The concept design proposed a modernised transport hub that improved ferry operations, passenger facilities, and connections between ferries, buses, private vehicles and people walking, cycling and using other mobility devices.

It aimed to balance the operational needs of the ferry terminal with improved safety, public spaces, parking, foreshore access, coastal habitat restoration and recognition of historical values.

Key features of the proposed concept design included:

  • a new dual-berth passenger ferry pontoon
  • safer pedestrian links
  • on-site parking and kiss ‘n’ ride facilities
  • sheltered ferry pontoon, gangway, and bus stop
  • improved vehicle and bus access
  • simplified barge and ferry access
  • landscaping and seating
  • community open space
  • provision for small commercial and retail outlets.

Community consultation and next steps

Community consultation on the proposed concept design was undertaken between 28 May and 21 June 2026.

For information about the community consultation activities undertaken, participation rates and consultation outcomes, please access the Consultation Summary Report.

All feedback received during community consultation was considered and will help inform refinement of the Dunwich Ferry Terminal Upgrade design to be included in the business case.
