The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is progressing planning for a $359 million program of road upgrades along Captain Cook Highway between Cairns and Smithfield.

The project will identify, investigate and construct upgrades along the Captain Cook Highway to improve safety, capacity and connectivity along the link.

The project includes an early works package for the section of Captain Cook Highway between Airport Avenue and James Street and is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments, with the Australian Government contributing $287.2 million and the Queensland Government $71.8 million (80:20).
