About the project

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is progressing planning for a $359 million program of road upgrades along Captain Cook Highway between Cairns and Smithfield.

The project will identify, investigate and construct upgrades along the Captain Cook Highway to improve safety, capacity and connectivity along the link.

The project includes an early works package for the section of Captain Cook Highway between Airport Avenue and James Street.

TMR is now investigating a number of options for upgrades as part of the Cairns Ring Road (CBD to Smithfield) project. Following development of the options, TMR will seek further feedback from the community before finalising the preferred upgrades.

This consultation is expected to be undertaken in late 2021.

Have your say

In April and May 2021 TMR sought feedback from the community about viable additional routes for traffic on Sheridan Street between Florence Street and Airport Avenue as part of the Cairns Ring Road (CBD to Smithfield) planning.

These routes are being considered to distribute traffic more evenly across the road network, to ease congestion and improve safety on all routes, particularly during peak travel times.

Two of the key routes under consideration are McLeod Street and Lake Street between Florence Street and Airport Avenue.

The information gathered from this survey will be used to inform the business case which is due to be completed in late 2022. A summary of the feedback can be found here.
