Overview

Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) is considering the introduction of a 6-knot speed limit in 2 areas of Baffle Creek:

Area 1: around a 500m section of waterway adjacent to the public boat ramp located on Baffle Creek at Rocky Point Road, Winfield – as shown on the map below.

Area 2: around a 385m section of waterway adjacent to the public boat ramp located on the south bank of Baffle Creek at Winfield Road, Winfield – as shown on the map below.

Why is this option being considered?

This consideration is in response to complaints and reports of unsafe boating activities and on water behaviour, particularly speeding vessels and excess vessel wash. Unsafe practices such as these create additional dangers to other waterway users and can cause damage to private properties, jetties, moored vessels, and boat ramps.

Local residents have also voiced concerns about the safety of the boat ramp at the end of Rocky Point Road when entering and exiting their vessels. The ramp is reported to be slippery and falls away sharply from the side, which requires vessels to be put a long way out into the water due to the shallow angle and silting at the end of the ramp.

Implementing a 6-knot speed limit could help reduce the wash from vessels passing by and rebounding off the island opposite the ramp, creating a safer and more stable environment for users when entering or exiting their boats.
